Fantastic site Adrian. During the late 1980s and 1990s I used to work on GPT's System-X. I was a part of BT (NSET) and I was based at 151 Gower Street, London. Did a lot of ISDN projects related to DSSS (Concentrator), ISDN (ISLM), IMUXes, DASS2, etc.. Used to test and verify System-X build at Martlesham Heath. Still remember the cryptic resource management MML commands! System-X used BTCoral66.

Thanks for the excellent and informative website. I recently bought a CDP-101 at a thrift store for the equivalent of $12 US. Surprisingly, it is very clean and everything seems to work flawlessly. I will be taking it apart to clean and lubricate the transport mechanism and look for any signs of localized overheating, and bad electrolytic capacitors. Technical information for older audio equipment is often hard to come by, so I was delighted to find your site referred to on tronola.com.

Nice site. Really enjoyed. Im in the process of putting a 2 channel vintage system together. Picked up the Technics SB RX30 speakers cheep. However, having a tough time finding foam surrounds. I did find that a Sansui Au717 sounds better than my Denon AVR and my Adcom 5503 amp. Though the Adcom was feed by the Denon AVR. So not really a fare comparison.

I enjoy your website ! amazing detail about LaserDisc players and tech. in 1981 i worked at DiscoVision in Carson California and made laserdiscs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DiscoVision my job was to take the clear laserdisc from the molding machines and place them on a huge storage rack to be placed in an oven and have the metal coating baked on them. i then had to remove the silver disc and place them on a conveyor belt to have the labels glued on them. this was my first job out of high school. in 1985 i was stationed at Yokota air force base in Tokyo Japan as a computer operator and for the first time I saw karaoke laserdisc players in action. i was stunned to see how popular Laserdisc were in Japan. I purchased my first Sony player in 1986 and still have many disc. sadly my player broke in 2000 and i no longer can play my collection. i have been a Laserdisc fan for 40 years. it was my first experience with hi-tech and i still work in the computer industry.

I have bought some weeks back a Technics SL-P10 and was looking for any information about it - and found your website. Thanks for putting this together! Something you may want to add, the SL-P10 actually has a skip forward and backward option. A bit hidden, but there are two buttons next to the numerical keys 1-5 ('*' and 'enter'). Anyway, after skipping it needs a few seconds (!) to find the correct track :-).

I have also same SE A5, and today better way to repair, or prevent classic lovely SE A5 issue with over-heat transistors - move to conterporary complementary pair : 2SA1837 & 2SC4793 (Toshiba) in "normal" TO-220 pack. Very useful info. I am currently rebuilding one of these amps for a friend and have had the same issue with the 39R resistors detonating. Whislt these are potentially a sacrificial component, I am wondering what effect it has on the valve itself. I am tempted to put in 0ne good quality 10 ohm 3 watt resistor to prevent such a problem again. I also like the bias bypass resistor idea. I have come across small carbon pots breaking down and causing all kinds of setup issues. I am also looking at the feedback circuit to try and stop a low frequency oscillation, which probably caused the 39r's to blow.

Adrian, Lex Siehler here, formerly of Cumberland, MD, now Conway/Myrtle Beach SC. A long time ago I told you the sad tale of my CDP-101, bought Jan 1984. It is no longer with me, but I have in the intervening years acquired two other units, with complementary issues. One has tracking/skipping problems and a damaged face (probably hauled out of a dumpster), the other is pristine, tracks perfectly, but has what sounds like a digital stream leaking into the audio. I would like to combine the two, by board-swapping, into one good working unit. Any guidance, suggestions or resources you can offer would be greatly appreciated. I wasn't sure your website would still be up, but I'm glad it is.

Great website! I found it on a search for CDP-101 information. I had actually viewed it several years ago - it seems, if my failing memory is right, that you've added quite a bit more info on the CDP. I hope to get a chance to read it thoroughly soon. I bought a unit in early 1984 (about $1000 - I had just received a modest inheritance) and, by 1990+/-, it had the classic symptoms - disk skipping and "popping". Sent it to Sony mid-'90s in the original packaging and they sent it back dumped in a box of peanuts with a note saying "Uneconomical to repair". And I have had the same experience as you with other Sony equipment (I do have a CDP-CA7ES changer given me by a friend that still works). Anyway, I sent the 101 to another repair shop I found online, but they couldn't do anything with it either. Because of other life stresses, I never retrieved it from that shop. I have since picked up two other units on eBay, both of which worked to start, but one of which developed a curious audio problem that sounded like a digital stream (buzz) leaking into the audio. The other unit still works, though it sometimes skips around until I reload the disc a few times. This unit has some cosmetic damage to the face, while the one with the audio problem is pristine. I've found a good tech, and hope to get them "blended" into one good working unit. Might have more info later, but that's all for now. By the way, I'm from western Maryland (Cumberland), but living in South Carolina now.

Hi Adrian, I have been playing with a CDP101 with a stuck tray, and it seems to be thd latch you pictured that is very sticky. I can manually move it and the disc will load and play(or top load it), however the motor just doesn't seem powerful enough. I have taken it apart to the point I can look at the part from both sides, attach/detached the spring, but have no clue as how to remove it for proper cleaning. Can you please advise as to how you cleaned this part?

Excellent article. I worked for a Sony Hi-Fi distributor from 1978 to 1980 and heard about the development of a "CD player" coming soon. I could not wait. In 1980 I went to work for Sony Corp of America, consumer electronics, RSC,southeast USA. We saw many CDP-101's come in with the STK failures, which was a bit disappointing. I had no trouble with the 101 I owned and eventually purchased a CDP-601ES. I have both still and several other CDP-101's. Love your story!

Hi Adrian and Susan, I have the pleasure of owning 2 CX500 Turbo's and 2 CX650 Turbo's, one of each are in great running and ridden condition the other two are mainly for spares although the 650T is almost complete but has a non functioning computer (CPU), I'm trying to find someone who repairs the Turbo computers, mine looks to be in very good condition but does not fire up at all (no LEDs light up)when I plug it into my good 650T, anyone know of a repairer?

I love this page, its presenting old school amps in an interesting and sometimes funny way. While dealing with lot of 3D and HDMI troubles over the last 6 years, I can understand what you have been through with thx standards. Actually I am running a modified Pioneer BDP LX 91. I was surprised how huge the improvement can be while changing just some components inside. Because I do not like manipulating the "raw audio" i use the analog 5.1 output. In comparision always better than digital outputs in my opinion. Actually I am considering going back to non HDMI amplifers like Technics SE-A series. I always loved the VU meters since the day I saw them as a teenager. And here is the point where I was finding your page. MANY Thanks for the details !

Hello Adrian, I hope you don't mind a fellow Brit contacting you out of the blue from over the pond! I stumbled across your site whilst on a quest regarding the Technics SB-M1/M2 speakers. It seems yours is one of a very few with any information on these beasts, you've done a great job with that! I have a pair of M2's that I purchased directly from a Technics rep whilst I was working in trade many years ago. At the time I was told that there were only 6 pairs in the UK and in fact other than at a trade show before I bought mine I have never seen another pair in the flesh! Over the years my circumstances and travels took me around Europe and in all honesty keeping hold of them was difficult, however somehow, despite them being a little worse for ware now I still have them in my possession. Unfortunately a friend who was 'looking after' them for a while has managed to damage one the tweeters and as I am sure you'll be aware they are very rare, more so over here in the UK. My question and plea is thus... 1)I don't suppose you happen to have or know of where I may be able to buy a EAS-3PH10S tweeter? 2)Ideally I'd love to keep them original but if locating a replacement tweeter is not possible (highly likely) do you have any suggestions or experience in changing them out on either the M1 or M2 for something else? The second option makes me cringe but currently I have two large, useless cabinets which used to sound excellent! I'd rather restore than dismantle/break them up but currently the latter is looking more likely :-( Many thanks for your time and I also enjoyed mooching around your site too! Hi Adrian, I've got your website a lot of excellent and useful information. Closest to my heart is that Velleman K4000 tube amplifier. The problems also are the same, as well as those excellent good moments of what that great tube sound give to us. The great thing about it is that, in particular, that your amplifier has so long and well documented history. Great work! I bought my amplifier in 1997, I don`t put it together myself, it had already done. The device was only a few months old. I have Quad ESL 63 with Gradient SW 63 Subwoofers and active crossover from Gradient specially made for Quad! Gradient is equipped with TWO peerless speakers 12" size in each box~!Subs are made like natural extension and stand for ESL 63 !They are two subs !Everything i needed from Quad and could not have,now with Gradient I have!Strong bass and beautiful upper mid and high tones !Speakers are driven with TWO amplifiers !TWO Quad 606 !For ESL 63 Quad 606 is running regular 8 ohms and 145w !But for Gradient same Quad 606 must work on 4 ohms to deliver amount of nearly 240W to work properly!This is wining combination and i will never change it !Also it work with Quad 66 Control unit(preamp) and Quad 67 CD player and FM4 Tuner ! But I also must admit that I have still a pair of Quad ESl 57 and very rare Gradient SW 57 also custom made for Quad to be like stand for 57 !Inside are also TWO peerless speakers but 8" in one !Thats mean they are 4 of them in two subs!The other system is equipped with Quad 303 amp for upper ESL 57 and one Quad 606 for Gradient SW 57 also on 4 ohms to deliver approximate 240 !Quad 66 Control Unit Quad 67CD and FM3 Tuner are in the complete !Al this is in ONE large room !Sound wonderful best sound ever i have !I heaved also before QUAD II monobloks from 1960 refreshed and 22 preamp!valve GE KT 66 witch I replaced with Golden Lion KT66 brand new !It worked beautiful!Shame i did not save Quad II/22 with me!I used also Yves Cochet AL-2 with two EL34 and preamp P3 with Quad 63 ! Thanks for all the info on the Pioneer IR Format! I will use this information to create a remote control board so I can control my PD-F1007 from across the room. In an A-B listening test the Sony CDP101 just had the edge over the Technics, sounding a little more solid and was about £200 cheaper in the shop. Another one to consider at the time (maybe a little bit later) was the Pioneer PD1 which if I remember rightly had Burr Brown DACs and sounded very lovely, it looked a bit like the Technics with a similar disc loading system but was very expensive! Dear all, I own a technics SE-A100 amplifier and SU-A200 pre-amplifier and SLP-990 CD player and RS-B100 dbx Stereo Cassette Deck and SH-8066 Equalizer, al in working condition. Interesting article about the M1's, I have owned a pair of SB-4's since '87 and have found them pretty reliable, although I did have to get the left one rebuilt in the early nineties (I used to max them out pretty regularly) - I now have them set up with a Denon AVR 1907 7.1 amp coupled with Celestion and Eltax satellites, they are a bit bass light so I run them with a REL Q50, this is entertaining but I want more so I am either looking to up-scale the Technics or add a larger sub, perhaps a second-hand Stadium III; or perhaps both. I have to say those M2's look like a pretty good option and if they ever come up, I'm interested :-)

Hi...I too have the Pioneer 919!!! It is the best!!! Unfortuately, Pioneer has decided since 2007 not to make them anymore!! I am hesitant to buy a used one...bnecause usually when someone is selling one--something is wrong with it!! Due to Sandy my basement was destroyed (but not my 919--which was on the first floor) so I am looking for another 919 for my basement! I run on a treadmill and an eliptical trainer...so I want some entertainment. I have 120 laser discs!!! Nice to meet you!

Hello Adrian and Susan! What a magnificent surprise finding this site!!! My name is Rodolfo but my friends call me Fito. My dad used to own 1 of the first 3 pairs of the Technics SB M1 monitors that came to Puerto Rico and let me tell you as you know that they sound just amazing!!!! He also had the exotic pre and power that you own to drive them. What great memories i have listening Jean Michel Jarre, Fresh Aire, GRP records on a SOTA turntable with an Eminent Technology tonearm going to the Technics pre. This High End Gear, made in the mighty 1980's was not only the equal sonically to much of the great stuff made in USA, in some cases it even surpassed them in performance and costruction. It's a great shame that Technics cease to import these great Audio gear and eventually that legendary Matsushita division eliminated. I also have the great pleasure of having listened to a pair of Quads some time ago and they are definitely keepers!!! Jaw Dropping Glorious Sound!! Keep up the great work and fantastic enthusiasm amigos!!

Hi Adrian, Great to see and read the site thats building nicely! My love of the great Technics brand started in the late eighties at the age of 18, i bought my first new Technics amplifier, the £450.00 SU-V90D which along with (all Technics, dont have model numbers to hand) two tape decks, a tuner, a graphic, a turntable, a CD player and a large pair of vintage Wharfedale E70's are still working well in my office today! However I am also the very proud owner of a Technics SE-A100 and SU-A200 but an even prouder owner of a Technics SE-A1! The SE-A100/SU-A200 are an incredible combo, very clean and reliable, beautifully engineered with more importantly a very detailed sound. The SE-A1 is just on another level out there, even after 35 years it still impresses, its weight 51kg, its size 550mm x 450mm x 250mm, its massive yet beautiful VU meters and its many engineered tactile controls behind a simple door finishing off a very clean look. However what amazes is the sound (as it should), so dynamic, so controlled, I'm hearing sounds not heard before on tracks, a true testement to the original design and I imagine very little betters it today. Its patented class A + design also serves as a room heater! I'm happy to supply pics or info to anyone interested and still looking for that SU-A2! :-) Toby

I used to drool over the Technics gear from about 79 onwards and had the Technics fold out catalogue on my wall with the ultimate system i think it was 33,000 UK pounds and consisted of the SP10 mk3 The RS-1800 reel to reel the RS-m95, the SB-f1000 Loudspeakers with a 18 inch bass unit and horn mid and tweeter ! and i think the power amplifier was a SA-E2 or one but i remember them quoting 300 watts per channel in class A. I now collect technics and other classic pieces i have a new in its box Technics sp 10 mk11 which came from ABC in Australia and a Mint Technics RS-1700 Which i have recapped with Black Gate caps throughout i am currently restoring two Technics RS 1500 Two Track decks. I always wanted the Technics SA-E3 or the the SA-E2 i might contact you to buy ! Since I was about 13 (1966) I have loved Quad equipment after seeing a pair of '57's with an FM2 Tuner, 22 valve control unit and II valve power amps on permanent working display in the Science Museum in Kensington.They were there as an example of - A - Superb British Electronic engineering and FM stereo. B The Ultimate in sound reproduction. After 30 odd years as a professional viola player with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, I finally acquired a similar set up, and love them. I am about to move on up to 63's and a Quad 909 with a specially modified 34 control unit (burr brown op amps and all new electrolytic's, phono. input converted to an extra line in) These mods and both sets of amps were done for me by the amazing guys at http://www.onethingaudio.net/ One Thing Audio in Coventry who still supply panels and a complete restoration service for both types of speaker. Hi! I was reading your Technics SL P1000 CD Player page and found it very interesting that you are fond of these old Technics CD players. Your page is informative as it is a little difficult to get info about these old CDPs. I have a 1959 Admiral Super 20 console radio (all tube), and have had numerous CDPs attatched to it, but nothing Ive tried sounds as good as my Technics SL P500. This CDP has a warm analog sound unlike the cold flat sound of other CDPs Ive tried. Ive veiwed the guts of the SL P500 and everything in there is fairly hi end. Gold plated RCA jacks, carrier has rubber spring loaded tray, and all the play modes of the SL P1000. The pickup sled, laser pickup, and linear motor also look identical to your pics of the SL P1000s. All chips are Technics proprietary except the BB PCM54HP DAC chip (only one), and the op amps. Also noticed the bright blue resin encapsulated daughter boards labaled Technics (with a TDK trademark logo) AL077L 5D and AL077R 5D. Differant unit design for each channel. Even the capacitors in the analog sections are high quality, looks like copper foil in a clear hard shell, tantilums maybe. Man, newer CDPs are just junk in comparison. Im interested in upgrading the two dual op amp chips, a AN6552 (4558 eqivalant), and M5238. Maybe even the AN6914 dual comparator chip. The PCM54HP DAC chip could be upgraded to PCM54KP for less noise. Any thoughts or suggestions. If interested I could take some pics and send them. Anyway, I didnt even know what I had until I saw your SL P1000 page and was motivated by it to take the top off of my SL P500. Thanks for sharing info on your vintage Technics!

I have seen just a part of your website, the one concerning HiFi devices that you have, but even not all from it. However, the influence of you opinion on SLP1000 was essential to me. Your critics made me to choose this one partical model among several that I could choose from recently. So I bought that unit because you said such nice words about it. I bought a SEA3 on 1995 but I due sail it some time after (that was certainly my biggest error of my life !!!). I'm searching a SE A3 MKII for my HC system. I just bought a SU A4 by Ebay to complete a hypothetic SE A3 MKII. Actually I use 3 Nad 208 THX and a Nad S200 to the LFE way. All speakers are based on Audax Professionnal speakers and Fostex (Like JBL for specs), with 97/98 dB of efficiency. I have a pair of DV-F727 players and was delighted to read about your findings on similarities between the DV-F727 and DV-F07. I immediately opened up my slave unit and looked over the various pcbs. I located a connector with the designation CN107 on the pcb that appears to have the surround sound decoder circuitry. The same signals look as if they also go to the pads for CN106, but the connector is missing. I think it's the right angle equivalent of CN107. CN107 is a vertical, 7 pin, 1mm FFC/FPC type connector. Luckily, the silkscreen next to the connector lists the pinout: TX, RX, DTR, CTS, 5v, GND, and NC. I'm guessing that these signals are TTL, but I haven't verified it with any measurements yet. If they turn out to be TTL, I'll be designing a tiny pcb which draws power from the connector and provides RS232 communications to a panel mount female DB9 connector for the back of the unit. I can send you some pictures if you're interested in my little hack. Wish me luck and thanks for the serial port info!

Hello, I got a Technics SL-P10 from a musician for free because it didn't work as it should (skipping, drop outs, not loading disks). I opened it and lubricated some parts, not knowing anything about this player. This helped, and I could try playing some CD's. Without expecting anything I connected the player to my HiFi set. And I was very surprised how this player outperformed my modern CD player. And finally I didn't want to miss it anymore. But, the problem with skipping was not solved. Now gross distortion occurred. I planned on buying another player via ebay (Studer, Revox), but then I searched the internet. But I was very lucky: I found your site, and with the adjustment guide I was really able to fix my player. It was not easy, only adjusting focus didn't help. I constructed my amplifer myself, so I own an oscilloscope (and frequency generator). With these tools I did some adjustments, and now my player works fine. I works well with the Onkyo 6ohms-90dB, sounds thick, deep, warm and clear although its inside looks older than yours. I am going to clean it, so can you share some experiences? How to clean, what kind of solvent to use, in which parts need special attention when cleaning...? I am really a dull in electronics so I hope to receive your kind instruction. As this one was produced for Japan domestic market (AC 100V), there are some little defferences. I will take some photos then send you and ask for your comment. (tell me how to send you photo?) Ihave a SEA3MKII, and use it it with a pair of JBL L250ti's with Audio Research SP8 Pre-Amp. The Technics has a fat sound, and the SP8 has a forward quality. Together they sound good. JBL wanted to compete with the RS1's from Infinity and are the best speakers they ever made. The only thing with the Technics is, one of the power meters works/and doesn't work depending on the phase of the moon, or something! It's a amp…from the time when audio equipment like 427 Cheve's rulled!

Hi Adrian, just picked up your website now - great stuff. Regarding the SE-a3, i have had one for over 20 years (I used to be the product manager for Technics in south Africa) and I would be reticent to swap it with most the product on the market today. Its an absolute beauty and a work horse of note. you enquired about using it with a vintage speaker set, I have mine setup with a pair of Kef RS-105.4 and they work exceptionally well together. Depending upon your musical tastes you may however find the very low bass a little thin (the mid bass is superb - controlled and tight) , in any case if necessary you could always add a sub woofer. Hello, very nice site - the technics stuff is incredible - i have a combo SEA100/SUA200 , but i have a problem with the control amp - i burned an input IC - UPD6364CA - and i can not find it anywhere on the net ! i'm thinking to buy a similar Technics preamp which uses the same IC - do you have any idea ? thx a lot for your anticipated answer ! Happy birthday to me and happy birthday to adrian-kingston.com! So this site has been up for a year now since my last birthday and it took me 43 years to get to this point! If you are reluctant to start your own site because it feels like the weight of the world to get going, I say just do 1 page at a time! At last a man who has my taste in music and creation. My name is George and i am writtingn from Greece.I am an electronics student and a fan of velleman kits. I haven't though ever tried a kit in this scale of money and i have a little thoughts i want to share with you..firstly let me describe my system.I just bought a pair of Klipsch rf15 speakers(love the tones the horns can produce) along with a Cambridge audio azur 640c cd player.As for my amp not much to say here...A "cheap" a/v amp that they say works fine.The Yamaha rx-V650.The system is not the hi-fi of my life ofcourse. It is a simple system to hear decent music.But i am thinking on building the K4040 kit...I want to create!I want to experience the tubes...I want to fix it on my own and be responsible for everything :) .Should i do it? should i wait to get more money to buy (eg the primaluna tube amp?) or others in the same price range(about 1600$ = 1300euros) ? or should i built the velleman one? for about 1100 euros? What is your suggestion? and my main question...the K4040 also needs another purchase or built kit...a good preamp so i can control the volume :) velleman has such kits but expensive too...what should i do? the preamp in the k4040 may work just fine but how am i going to control the volume? any ideas? Hallo, through seachring the Web about the Seleco SVT 180 I found your homepage here. First of all! Very good and very explicit. If only I had the possibilties you have for a home cinema setup. Now the reason why I'm writing is the Seleco SVT 180. I might have the chance to get hold onto one for good money. Even though I know you have reached a much higher level of quality with the Sharp Beamers, do you think the Seleco is a good choice for some DVD watching and gaming? One thing your report about all the diffrent type of projectors showed quite clearly. You didn't seem to have trouble with the Seleco, but you g´had plnety of trouble with the Sharps for a long time. I'd be pleased if you could give me your opinion about the Seleco. Is the quality of the pictures shown so very much worse then of those newer high priced beamer? Thanks in advance for an answer. Greetings - I've heard more good than bad about the Velleman amps. But because of your article on the K4000, I've decided to order the K4040 (after all these years). I love playing my records. Last year I built a phone preamp using four 12ax7's and sounds great. I have a pair of Spendor S5e. Now I need the tube amp - so the K4040 is on order. I've heard that the cyro treated valve art and the TAD EL34's sound out of this world. Maybe I'll order a set and let you know how they sound. Best Regards, Werner

just read your page on the Velleman K4000 amp. I've been using one of these for years and always looking for upgrades etc. What a great amp and congrats on a fine website. Would love a set of those rings though when I can afford it. I use the amp with some reconditioned IMF ALS40's and a Marantz CD. Great sound at a good price I think.

I have the 1800's also, and I really like them for that in your face, hard hitting sound. Unfortunately I think I damaged one of the tweeters,(possibly a curious 3 year old poked something in there) there is no sound at all coming from one of the tweeters. Any ideas how I can test the problem, and/or repair it. Thanks

Keep me informed about the progress of your program for using a PC to control the Pioneer PD-F100. Hi! I recently found a like-new Sony CDP-101 in a bazaar, even the cd cleaning cloth was still in its sealed plastic bag! Hi, I have got a SU-C909U PRE-AMP and SU-909S POWER AMP combination. I want to know if the SE-A5 / A3 power amps will be compatible. Was there a Pre-Amp these were originally sold with? My power amp does offer the option of attatching further power amps. However, mine was built 99/2000. What is the best power amp that Technics did? Thanks, Olly.

Hi Adrian what a great site, I stumbled across it yesterday when i was looking for info about my slp1000 (your site seems to be the only mention of it on the Internet) that i bought for £15 !!! on Satuday at our Local Cash converter Store ( AND THEY MADE A PROFIT ON IT!!!) I have searched and searched for comparison information for DVD vs. LD and with the model LD player you own in mind. My DLP really shows shortcomings which I have been hoping is the LD player I own.
